BBO Crystal, known chemically as β-BaB2O4, is a remarkable nonlinear optical material widely used in laser technology. Grown using the flux method, BBO Crystal is a negative uniaxial crystal characterized by its ordinary refractive index (no) being greater than its extraordinary refractive index (ne). This unique optical property allows both Type I and Type II phase matching to be achieved through angular tuning, making BBO Crystal highly versatile for frequency conversion applications. Its performance is especially significant in the visible and deep ultraviolet spectral regions.

BBO Crystal

The applications of BBO Crystal are extensive and critical in modern photonics. It is commonly used for second, third, fourth, and even fifth harmonic generation of Nd: YAG lasers, enabling efficient frequency doubling, tripling, quadrupling, and quintupling. Moreover, BBO Crystal is employed in Ti :sapphire and alexandrite lasers for their second, third, and fourth harmonic generation. Its excellent nonlinear properties also make it suitable for frequency mixing and harmonic generation in dye lasers. These capabilities stem from BBO Crystal’s broad phase matching range, covering wavelengths from approximately 409.6 nm to 3500 nm, which provides flexibility across a wide spectrum of laser sources.

One of the standout features of BBO Crystal is its wide transmission range, spanning from 190 nm to 3500 nm, which ensures minimal absorption losses over a vast spectral domain. Additionally, BBO Crystal exhibits a high damage threshold, making it robust for high-power laser applications. Its optical homogeneity is exceptional, with birefringence uniformity (δn) close to 10^-6 per centimeter, contributing to consistent and high-quality frequency conversion processes.

BBO Crystal’s combination of broad phase matching capabilities, extensive transmission window, high damage threshold, and superior optical uniformity makes it an indispensable nonlinear crystal in laser engineering. The crystal’s adaptability in harmonic generation for various laser types highlights its importance in advancing laser technologies and photonic research.
